I wasn't gonna post till tomorrow but if you haven't heard already...this qualifies as a state of emergency. Our electric bills could go up 500-600 percent!! I already pay around $160 per month for my 1100 sq ft house. It could be as high as $800 per month now! Not sure about you, but I'm f*cked! We need to declare a state of emergency!

This just in from the KINY Radio web site.

UPDATE : Juneau loses Snettisham power for extended period, avalanche to blameJuneau has been choked off from its chief supply of electricity by an avalanche.Gayle Wood of Alaska Electric Light and Power says it happened at about four this morning. She says it was hardly noticed, except by Thane Road residents, because of diesel generation they had running at the time and low load demands at that hour. She says it was a massive avalanche about three miles from the Snettisham power house that took out about a mile and a half of transmission line. That includes damage to four to five towers, she says.Wood says the community will be virtually reliant on diesel generated power for two to three months with the exception of power that can be generated through the Gold Creek, Salmon Creek and Annex Creek facilities. The electric utility official says customers can expect to see some very high bills.
Residential rates were at 11 cents per kilowatt hour.Wood initially estimated it would go to 30 to 35 cents, but has since revised that figure to 50 cents and adds that's a conservative figure.
Since the area is very unstable, Wood says they don't expect to start repairs for two to three weeks since they need to wait for avalanche danger to subside. She describes the terrain in the area as very steep. At this point, they're trying to assess the damage from the air.Wood calls it the worst disaster they've ever had on the Snettisham line. She used the word "catastrophic" and called it "a hard hit."Wood stressed the importance of conservation during this time. Right now, she says they're trying to figure out how to secure enough diesel to handle this kind of long term need.

Last I heard we were taking the shaft because of the unprecedented rain shortage (how do you cough "bullshit" in writing?) So rates are gong to .$50 because we are switching from diesel to diesel? OK maybe the bus I rode to school on was a little short but WTF eh?

Good point...WTF! I hope something can be done. This is already causing mass hysteria.

Just pay attention now. Watch what happens when this 'crisis' is over. What will the new rates settle out at?

If you guessed 'HIGHER' you win a slightly used dog leash and some muzzle tape from Coffin Prancer.

I'm new hear and hope I'm posting this correctly. Below is a copy of what I posted to the empire and also sent in to the 'letters to the editor' address. Hope they take my questions seriously:

Short term disaster, long term questions for AEL&P.

This is a disaster both natural and financial. It's obvious rates are going up significantly but I question how AEL&P could possibly come up with a "quintuple" figure within hours of the avalanche. They still don't know the extent of the damage, how long repairs will take, cost of 'negotiated' diesel contract for the higher volume and how much energy we will save when we all reduce usage.

AEL&P will try to mitigate any losses immediately by raising rates, this is normal business practice. My concern is who is going to monitor their books over the course of this disaster. With their track record this process needs independent scrutiny.

Questions:

When they apply for a rate increase with the regulatory agency will they use accurate or inflated numbers? Will they include their standard profit margin or a 'break even' figure.

When they make insurance claims who will keep track of settlement payouts? This could take months if not years, will any settlements be passed on to customers?

What about any State or Federal aid that might be applied for? Again this may take years to be paid out -- who will keep track and will customers benefit from future windfalls?

AEL&P will be able to write off any losses against their income taxes in the future -- who will monitor this 'savings' and will it be passed on to customers?

We are all in this together for the short term and it's going to hurt. What concerns me is who is going to monitor the long term bookkeeping of this state approved and 'regulated' monopoly?

If customers have to foot the bill for now then AEL&P SHOULD IN NO WAY BE ALLOWED TO PROFIT FROM THIS NOW OR IN THE FUTURE! Someone needs to make sure these inflated rates do not include inflated profits above what they were making before the disaster. The future financial aid, insurance payouts and tax savings also needs to be monitored and applied toward customer savings, not toward the companies profits!

How do we get this process started?

YEAH!!!
i really don't know what else to say, great questions....i just hope some one who will NOT be profiting from this "disaster" will listen to the people.
My biggest question is:
ARE THEY GOING TO CHARGE THE CRUISE SHIPS MORE TOO?
probably not....don't want to scare them away....
who cares if the actual people that live here MOVE AWAY!!
